Preparation for GATE Mechanical Engineering
Question
Question: I am a final year B Tech Student ofMechanical Engineering and looking to appear for GATE Exam. What is the ideal strategy for the preparation for exam?
Now that you have made your mind for appearing for the GATE Exam, the exact time to prepare for the exam is the 5th semester. The choice between joining a coaching centre or self-preparation has its respective pros and cons. On one hand, the Coaching adds to discipline in your preparations along with a systematic approach. However, considering the classes entertain a large section of students there is there’s more likelihood of the time being wasted. The candidates can self prepare for the exam and it is not mandatory to join a coaching institute.
B)Strategy to Prepare for the GATE Mechanical Engineering
Steps: First and Foremost it is essential to go through the entire GATE syllabus. There are subjects that you comfortable with while there are others you are not. For mechanical branch, subjects can be divided into 3 categories:-
a)Grade A – Thermodynamics, strength of materials, fluid mechanics and machineries, production & manufacturing Science, mathematics. From the exam perspective Grade, A is the most important and the basic subjects which you should cover as early as possible. The candidates preparing for the GATE exam should be prepared first along with the necessary practice. b)Grade B – Operations research, industrial engineering, Heat and mass transfer, the theory of machines, machine design. Grade B subjects are moderately important. c)Grade C – metrology, material science, RAC, I C Engine, engineering mechanics. Grade C subjects are comparatively less important.
C)Action Plan for the Exam The Action plan for the preparation may vary with the individual to individual and is dependent on the candidates level of preparation. -Thermodynamics – 30 days -RAC – 5 days -Engg mechanics – 4 days -Strength of materials – 15 days -Theory of machines – 15 days -Machine design – 15 days -Heat and mass transfer – 15 days -Manufacturing science and production technology – 40 days -Material science – 5 days -Industrial Engg, OR and Metrology – 10 days -Fluid mechanics and Machinery – 20 days Along the way, it is essential to go through the previously studied topics/subjects and keep the last month for dedicated practice.
D)Important Reference Books a)Mechanics of solid – Timo Shenko and Gere, BC Punamia (numerical) b)Fluid Mechanics and machinery – Subramanya (numerical), Bansal c)Theory of Machine – Rattan, Khurmi d)HMT – Rajput (numerical) e)Thermodynamics – P K Nag (numerical) f)Engineering Mechanics – Any suitable book g)Material Science – Callister h)Production Technology – P N Rao (theory), Ghosh Malik (theory + some numerical), Swadesh Kumar Singh (Made easy, too much detailed, suitable for numerical) i)RAC – Khurmi j)Industrial Engg – Telsang or any other suitable book k)Machine Design – Bhandari (Numericals)
Following the above strategies diligently shall enable you to secure a good rank in the GATE Mechanical Engineering Exam.
